When the Old Sewer Line Has to Go - We Replace It Without Digging
Sewer lines reach the end of their service life. In South Florida, where corrosive soil, shifting limestone, mature root systems, and 60+ year-old cast iron all conspire against buried infrastructure, a failed sewer is not a question of if - it is when. When the line is past repair - collapsed, bellied, missing wall sections, or shifted off-axis - USA Plumbing & Trenchless replaces it using pipe bursting, the trenchless replacement method that pulls a brand-new HDPE sewer main into the existing path from just two small access pits. No trench across the yard. No backhoe in the driveway. No torn-up pavers or sod.
Signs Your Sewer Line Needs Full Replacement
Repairs handle isolated damage. Replacements solve a line that has reached structural end-of-life. The decision is made off camera footage, not guesswork. The strongest indicators we look for during the free inspection:
- ✓ Recurring Backups Across Multiple Drains - When toilets, showers, and floor drains all back up at the same time, the failure is in the main line, not a single fixture branch.
- ✓ Bellies, Sags, or Settled Sections - The pipe has dipped below grade due to soil movement, creating a low spot that traps waste and never fully drains. CIPP cannot fix grade - the line has to be replaced.
- ✓ Collapsed or Crushed Sections - Cast iron lines older than 50 years often have collapsed segments where the wall has rotted through. The bursting head pulls a new pipe through and fractures the old one outward.
- ✓ Severe Corrosion or Wall-Thickness Loss - When more than half the pipe wall is gone, the line is structurally finished even if it is still draining today. Replacement now is far cheaper than the emergency call later.
- ✓ Multiple Failure Points Along the Same Line - Spot repairs at three or four locations cost more than replacing the whole run with HDPE - and you still have aging pipe between the patches.
- ✓ Persistent Yard Issues - Soggy patches, unusually lush green grass over the line path, sinkholes, or sewage odors in the yard all point to a line leaking into the soil.
How Trenchless Sewer Replacement Works
Pipe bursting compresses what used to be a five-to-ten-day excavation project into a one-to-two-day trenchless install. The process is straightforward:
- 1 Free HD Camera Inspection - We scope the failed line, record the footage, and walk you through what we are seeing onsite.
- 2 Permit & Locate - We pull the Miami-Dade plumbing permit, mark utilities, and locate the two access pit positions.
- 3 Two Access Pits - One pit at the cleanout end, one at the city tap or septic connection. Both are about 4 ft x 4 ft - not a trench.
- 4 Bursting Head Pull-Through - A hydraulic head connected to new HDPE pipe is pulled through the old line. The old pipe fractures outward into the soil while the new pipe is pulled into place.
- 5 Connections, Inspection & Restoration - We tie the new HDPE into your cleanout and the city tap, schedule the building department final inspection, and back-fill the two pits.
Why HDPE Pipe Outlasts What It Replaces
The new line is high-density polyethylene (HDPE) - heat-fused at every joint rather than gasketed, eliminating the joint failures that age every clay, cast iron, and PVC system in South Florida. HDPE is rated for 50+ years, resists root intrusion, flexes without cracking when ground shifts, and does not corrode in the limestone-laced Miami soil that destroys cast iron from the outside in. Manufacturers typically warranty the pipe itself for 50 years.
USA Plumbing & Trenchless serves residential, commercial, and municipal properties across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe County - including Miami, Hialeah, Coral Gables, Doral, Kendall, Homestead, Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Hollywood, Miramar, Plantation, Key West, Key Largo, and Marathon.
Sewer Replacement - Frequently Asked Questions
The strongest indicators are recurring backups in multiple drains at the same time, slow drains throughout the house, sewage odors in the yard, soggy or unusually green patches over the line path, settling or sinkholes near the line, and gurgling sounds from toilets when other fixtures run. Any of these combined with a sewer line over 40 years old in Miami means a camera inspection is overdue. If the inspection shows collapsed sections, bellies, or extensive corrosion, replacement is the right call.
We use pipe bursting. Two small access pits are excavated - one at each end of the failed line. A hydraulic bursting head is connected to a brand-new HDPE pipe and pulled through the old line by a winch. As the head moves forward, it fractures the existing pipe outward into the surrounding soil while simultaneously pulling the new pipe into place behind it. No trench is dug across your yard.
HDPE (high-density polyethylene) sewer pipe is rated for 50+ years and is fused at the joints rather than gasketed - eliminating the leak points found in jointed clay, cast iron, and PVC systems. HDPE is also resistant to root intrusion, ground shifting, and the corrosion that ages cast iron in South Florida soil. Most manufacturers warranty the pipe itself for 50 years.
Yes. Miami-Dade County requires a plumbing permit for any sewer line replacement, and final inspection is required before the line is back-filled and put back in service. USA Plumbing & Trenchless pulls the permit, schedules the city inspector, and handles every interaction with the building department as part of the project. You do not sign anything with the city.
Cost depends on line length, depth, pipe diameter, soil conditions, and access. Trenchless pipe bursting typically saves 25 to 40 percent versus traditional excavation once you factor in concrete restoration, landscape replacement, and irrigation repair.
